Tips for Indoor Planting

When you think about an indoor garden, you need to ensure that you take into consideration all possible points before actually starting it. First, you need to decide what kind of plants you’ll be planting. Then you need to pick a good location. If the plants that you’re planning to plant need sunshine, then you’ll obviously have to pick a spot near the window where they are exposed to sunlight. If they need shade, then you can have them under the window sill, where they are protected from the sun. Next, you need to make sure that the area is properly cordoned off. Nothing from the inside of the garden gets out, and nothing from the outside goes inside. This way, your garden remains clean and so does the rest of the home. The next thing you need to take care of is proper drainage of the water. All plants need water. So you have to make sure that the water that seeps out gets properly drained and does not mess up the entire room. Given below are some ideas that you may want to try out.

Herb Garden
Nothing looks prettier in the interior of a home than a herb garden. The lush green herbs, together with their tantalizing aroma all mixed together in the air, render a sense of peace and exquisite ‘flavor’ to the house. If you don’t want them on the ground, you can have them in hanging garden planters all around a room. Your options for herbs can be coriander, thyme, mint, etc.

Flower Garden
Nothing says garden better than flowers. And if you don’t have the space for a full-fledged landscape, you can have your own little miniature flower garden inside your home. Pick one flower that blooms in different colors. Roses, gerbera daisies, and orchids are good options but tulips definitely take the cake in indoor flower gardening. They look stunning, especially when they bloom against a wall in a contrasting color.

Vegetable Garden
Another popular idea is a vegetable garden. It is practical and very useful. While most of it will be container gardening, if you have a balcony, you can allot a corner and plant the vegetables directly into the ground too. Chillies and tomatoes are very good options. Avoid roots and tubers for indoor vegetable gardens as they could get quite messy.

Cactus Garden
An unconventional yet fabulous idea for an indoor garden is a cactus garden. Go to your local nursery and get different varieties of cactus plants. The best part of this idea is that since cactus plants are really hardy, you do not have to bother about watering and taking too much care of them. They do that for themselves.

Indoor gardening can bring a sense of peace and calm to your home. It beautifies your home and makes it appear more friendly and relaxed. So, get started on one for your home right away.

Tips to Water Plants While You are on a Vacation

The very thought of a vacation could be a cause of worry for those avid gardeners who have no one to water their plants in their absence. While two to three days without water may not cause damage to most plants, a longer duration would affect them detrimentally. It is also not possible to water them well in advance. In such cases, you may either go for some plant watering aids from garden stores, or try some DIY ideas. So, all you have to do is to adopt any of these methods or get some ready-made devices, so that you can find your plants hale and hearty, when you return from a vacation. Go through this Buzzle article for a brief overview of the same.

DIY Watering Systems

Bottle Method 1
This is one of the simplest methods to ensure that your plants get enough water while you are on vacation. Take a plastic bottle, and make a tiny hole through its base. Fill the bottle with water, and place it on the soil just besides the plant. The base of the bottle must be slightly below the soil surface. Now, water the soil thoroughly. The water will drip from the bottle, as and when the moisture level of the soil drops.

Bottle Method 2
Take an empty beer bottle; clean and fill with water. Water the soil thoroughly. Now close the opening of the bottle with your hand, and flip it upside down. Insert the bottle into the soil (with its neck down) at an angle. Do this fast, so as to reduce the amount of spillage. As in the first method, water will flow from the bottle to the soil, in a gradual manner. If the plant is big, you may use two bottles.

Absorbent Threads

This method uses the capillary action of water to provide moisture for plants. Take a container filled with water. Place it on a slightly elevated area besides the plants that are to be watered. Take some absorbent strings (even shoelaces will do), and tie them to a small, heavy object. Put that object inside the container so that it holds the threads in place.
Now, use a screwdriver to poke holes near the plants. The holes must have a minimum depth of three to four inches. The other end of each string must be inserted inside the hole. The strings will wick water from the container to the soil.

A thick layer of mulch will reduce the amount of water lost from the soil. So water the soil well, before covering the surface area with mulch. However, make sure that the mulch layer is of normal thickness. However, an unusually thick layer of mulch may cause harm to the plant. You may also use newspapers soaked in water for mulching. This method is not suitable for a period of more than four to five days.
Water Tray
If you have a big, shallow tray that can hold several pots, make use of it. Spread some pebbles or small stones on the tray. Fill the tray with water, till the pebbles are completely immersed. Place the plant pots on the tray.

Plastic Bag

Water the plants thoroughly. Now, place a clear plastic bag over the plant, and secure the ends of the bag to the rim of the pot using a rubber band. You may insert some bamboo stakes in the soil so that the foliage of the plant does not touch the plastic bag. This set up works like a miniature greenhouse, as the plastic bag traps moisture inside but allows movement of air. Make sure that the plants are not kept in direct sunlight. Shift them to a location with some indirect light.
These are some of the simple ways to water your plants while you are away on vacation. If you have extra empty pots, add some soil into them and water thoroughly. Place potted plants inside them. Instead of soil, damp newspaper or sponge may also work. You may also try covering the plant pots with damp towels. If you find these methods time-consuming, you may opt for devices and gadgets that are readily available in garden stores.

Store-bought Watering Devices

Capillary Mat
Made of absorbent fabric, the capillary mat holds moisture which, in turn, can be taken up by the plants. If you are going for a long vacation, spread this mat inside the bathtub, and turn on the faucet till water trickles drop by drop. Make sure that the drain is open. Now place the potted plants on the mat.

Aqua Globe
This instrument is nothing but a glass bulb with an attached tail. All you need to do is to fill water in it and push the tail into the soil near the plant. When the moisture level of the soil reduces, water will drain slowly from the globe to the soil. These instruments are available in different sizes, from which you can choose the right one as per the size of the plant and the duration of your vacation.

Terracotta Plant Waterer
This conical, hollow, terracotta spike (like an ice cream cone with a hole at the bottom) has an open end to insert a bottle filled with water. The other end with a pointed tip has very small holes. Clean an empty wine bottle and fill with water. Place the cone over the top of the bottle. Now tip the bottle upside down, along with the cone. Insert the tip of cone into the soil, at an angle. Water will seep into the soil through the pores in the terracotta and the small holes provided in the tip.

Drip Irrigation
Get an inexpensive drip irrigation kit for watering plants while you are on vacation. However, you must attach a timer to the spigot so that you can choose the time and amount of watering.

Soaker Hose

These hoses can be used to keep the soil moist for a long duration. They have tiny weep holes, through which water seeps into the soil in very small amounts. You can keep the hoses beneath the soil or mulch. In this case too, you have to attach a timer to regulate watering. Another option is to keep the faucet open, just enough that it drips water.

Time-release Water Products
Various products are now available for time-released irrigation. These products contain biodegradable materials with water in the gel form. Water is released, as and when the gel comes into contact with the soil. Water the soil thoroughly, before placing the gel. The amount of gel must be in accordance with the size of the pot.
In short, watering plants in your absence is no longer a cause of concern. You can use DIY mechanisms or ready-made
devices for the same. Otherwise, hire a garden sitter, who will take care of the plants, while you are away. Find out if any of your friends or neighbors are ready to help you out.

Ways to Water a Plant

Plants tend to wilt and dry if they do not receive adequate water. A little effort to water the plants correctly will let them stay healthy and vibrant. Your house will just be a piece of heaven with green plants swaying and colorful flowering plants blossoming. So get the tips in the following content and help plants derive complete benefits of water.

Tips for Watering Plants

  • The water must penetrate their roots and should get distributed throughout the shoot system.
Water plants early in the morning or in the evening, when the rate of evaporation is minimum. Avoid doing the same in the presence of sun and wind.
  • You should water young plants and saplings regularly, as they need to establish their root system.
  • Plants require less water if the soil is moisture laden. Dry soil requires frequent watering, so that the plants do not wilt or dry away.
  • Plants require more water during summer than in winter.
  • Plants susceptible to diseases should not be watered at night as water retention will make them vulnerable to fungus and bacterial attack.
  • Grass beds require an inch of water for few days to prevent from drying. It also enhances luxurious growth.
  • Mature plants can be watered heavily and even less frequently water, they can survive for a long time due to their extensive root system.
  • With excess water, the roots are unable to breathe and their leaves turn yellow with mushy stems.
  • Container gardening requires more water than those planted in grounds.
  • Shrubs, landscape plants, and trees should be watered just outside the drip line while vegetables and perennials require heavy watering as they have shallow roots when young.
  • Before you begin, you should also know the age of the plant. Young samplings require more water as compared to the older plants.

Significance of Watering Plants

Scientifically, water is necessary for supporting the most vital processes that sustain life. It is essential for plant photosynthesis and respiration. Much water is lost from plants through a process called transpiration. So to supplement the same need, external watering is essential. It has many dissolved minerals and salts in it that are important for overall healthy survival of plants. These are taken up by the plants’ root system.

Watering plants with different liquids can be done using liquid fertilizers or fertilizer mixtures. Water plants by pouring water at the base of the plants so that it penetrates deep into the root system. Do not throw or splash. Use a pouring can for a smoother process. Later, allow the plants to dry for some time so that their root system do not get clogged.

While on a Vacation

You can device a sprinkler system that can store water, and water the plants automatically. For your houseplants, you can hang an inverted bottle, containing enough water to last a few days. Keep it capped and prick few holes in it. In this system, the water will drip slowly over the plants and the root system can soak it completely. For outdoor plants, cover them completely with plastic bags and water before leaving. The plastic bags will prevent evaporation. The moisture will be retained, preventing the plants from wilting.

Tips on Finding a Professional Tree Care Service

Gardening experts and enthusiasts have fair knowledge about how to maintain their garden. They know exactly what is required for proper growth, whether it is the use of fertilizers, watering, mulching, pruning, removal of weeds and deadwood, etc.

However, not all are experts, and there are others who want to develop their backyard into a beautiful garden but do not possess the advanced skills essential for that. They can, at the most, plant the desired trees at the desired location, and water them regularly. But, having a healthy, beautiful garden is more than just watering plants. They need to be monitored regularly to see if they are growing properly, have contracted any disease, or are old enough and need to be removed. This is where a professional tree care service comes into the picture. These people are trained individuals who can perform all the gardening tasks that you can’t (due to the lack of equipment and proper knowledge).
It is important to hire a good tree care service because there are a lot of people out there with a pick-up truck and a chainsaw, who call themselves tree experts. While an experienced tree care professional can yield satisfactory results, an inexperienced person can create more problems for you. To avoid those problems, consider the following tips before choosing your tree care service.
Have Multiple Options
Get in touch with your friends and family for references. Ask them about their experience with tree care services, and note down the contact number if they say it’s good. You can also check your local government department that handles the licenses of the tree care services of your area, for a complete list of tree care service companies. There is no harm in asking for multiple references before choosing one company, In fact, a good research will widen the scope for the selection of the best tree care service for your yard.
Look for Qualified Staff
For a good tree care service, a well-qualified arborist is a must. A certified and trained arborist can take care of your trees in the best possible way, and help you maintain your yard for years to come. He is one person who knows what special care is required to deal with old, diseased, and damaged trees, and keep the yard in good shape. Although the services provided by arborists vary, depending on their personal skills, every ISA certified arborist may generally provide the following tree services:
» Planting

» Pruning

» Emergency care
» Fertilization

» Pest control

» Tree removal

Apart from the arborist, other tree care personnel should be equally qualified in their work. For instance, if there is a need to remove a giant dead tree from the yard, check if the staff is experienced in stump grinding and other specific aspects of the job. Also, make sure that the company has the necessary equipment required for the task, in place.
Compare Services
Don’t be in a hurry to hire a tree care service just because they are offering a good discount on the deal. Take your time and research well before finalizing a tree care service. After collecting references from several sources, you must have a good list of various companies with contact numbers of the contractors. Call these contractors and note down every bit of information given by them, right from their certification to an estimate of their work. Once you have collected information from all the contractors, compare the prices and services provided by them, and shortlist the most suitable ones. Then meet the contractors personally, and negotiate the terms of the contract and what you expect from the company.
Consider the Cost
It is definitely important to negotiate on the prices quoted by the service provider to prevent over-expenditure. However, keep in mind that cheap is not always better, because it can make you spend even more money in the long run as a result of a badly performed task.

Moreover, a good professional is the one who pays for several specialized equipment pieces, and carries several insurances, which demands a considerable amount of payment. If you find that the estimate provided is well below average, then there are two possibilities―either there are certain hidden costs, which might show up after the work is done, or the contractor may not be fully insured or trained.
Inspect the Yard with the Contractor
It is important for you as well as the contractor to have an idea about which trees in the yard need to be worked upon. Once that is decided, you can plan how the workers will be accessing the area for their task. Furthermore, you will have to vacate the area of cars or any other gardening or household items to prevent any damage caused by falling branches. Inspecting the entire yard will also help the contractor arrive at an estimate of the total cost.
Sign a Written Contract
It is extremely important to have a written copy of the contract before any work starts. Read through the documents carefully, to avoid further problems.

Also, check if the contractor has sent all the insurance and workers’ compensation related documents directly to you. If the company fails to produce these certificates, then treat it as a warning sign, and avoid availing services of such a company.
Lastly, never trust door-to-door contractors, as they might be con artists who travel from one place to another preying on homeowners.

Ways to Grow and Care for Grape Ivy Plant

Grape ivy tendrils have suction disks that help the plant cling to surfaces like walls and tree trunks.
As the name rightly suggests, grape ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) is a woody vine that belongs to the grape family Vitaceae. Though the berries of this plant are not edible, the plant is grown for ornamental purposes. Grape ivy is not related to true ivy, and is native to Asian countries, like Japan, China, and Korea. It is also called Japanese creeper, Boston ivy, Japanese ivy, etc.
The scientific name of the plant indicates its genus (Parthenocissus) and the specific epithet (tricuspidata). The term tricuspidata is derived from the shape of grape ivy leaves, which have three pointed lobes.

The green summer foliage turns red during autumn.
During spring, the plant produces red-colored shoots that turn green as they mature. The foliage remains glossy green throughout the summer. The color of the foliage changes to orange-red during fall. Though the plant retains its leaves during winter, it may shed if the temperature drops too low. A new cultivar named Parthenocissus tricuspidata purpurea has reddish-purple leaves throughout the year. Parthenocissus tricuspidata veitchii is another variety with smaller leaves that turn red during fall. The cultivar named ‘Beverly Brooks’ has bright red fall foliage and large leaves. However, the cultivars may not be as hardy as the original species.

Grape ivy produces blue berries during fall.
During summer, the plant produces greenish-yellow flowers that are mostly inconspicuous. Small, blue-colored, round berries appear during fall. The berries develop in clusters on bright red stems. Though they are consumed by birds and small mammals, the berries are toxic for humans. The plant is said to be moderately toxic for cats and dogs too.
Grape Ivy Plant Care
Grape ivy is a hardy plant that can be grown without much care. It can be grown outdoors as well as indoors. Usually, grape ivy is grown on walls, trellises, fences, pergolas, etc. It can easily grow to a height of around 50 to 60 feet. The plant is best for USDA zones 4 to 8.
Soil and Sun
Grape ivy is tolerant to a wide range of growth conditions. However, they grow well in partial shade to full sun. Those growing in full sun develop bright fall color. Partial shade is preferred in warmer areas. Though it grows in different types of soil; well-drained, loamy soil is preferred for grape ivy. The ideal pH level ranges between 6.1 to 7.5. Mulching is beneficial for retaining the moisture in the soil.

Grape ivy requires frequent watering, till it gets established. Once established, try to keep the soil slightly moist. This can be done by watering the plant once a week during spring and summer. Reduce the frequency of watering during winter and fall. Avoid over-watering, it can cause root rot. In case of a very hot summer, water the plant as and when the soil gets dry. Watering is not a must for established plants.
Being hardy and self-reliant, the grape ivy plant does not require frequent feeding. Apply a small amount of all-purpose fertilizer once a year during spring. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer regarding the dosage and method of application. Water thoroughly before and after application of fertilizer. Avoid feeding the plant if it grows too fast and is getting invasive.

If you want to grow the plant as a climber, it must have proper support. Grape ivy needs a surface to attach its tendrils. Tree trunks, walls made of rocks, bricks, wood, etc., are ideal for growing this plant. Wooden walls may develop mold and get damaged in the long run. Avoid growing grape ivy on painted walls as the suckers will damage the paint. The same applies to walls clad with siding. Grape ivy is ideal as a wall cover if you are looking for a permanent fixture, because removal of established plants can get difficult.

Without proper control, grape ivy may turn invasive.
With proper growth conditions, grape ivy grows really fast. It can cover walls and fences within no time. So, pruning is highly necessary to check its unrestrained and aggressive growth. You can remove the new shoots as and when they develop, especially during spring. Hard pruning during winter is good for controlling the growth of the plant. Apart from that, remove diseased and damaged stems. Remove new plants that grow from fallen berries and stem cuttings.
The easiest way to propagate grape ivy is to use stem cuttings. Try to get cuttings with a length of 4 to 5 inches. All you need to do is to remove the leaves near the cut end. Dip that end in rooting hormone and plant it in a container filled with soilless potting mix. It takes around two weeks for the cutting to develop roots and new leaves. You can transplant it in a pot or in the ground. Another method is to collect the seeds from ripe berries and grow them into new plants during fall. Plant grape ivy saplings at a distance of around 10 feet.
Pests and Diseases

Grape ivy is prone to powdery mildew, downy mildew, canker, leaf spots, etc. They are also get affected by pests like beetles, scales, aphids, caterpillars, and many other insects. Spraying soap solution on the foliage may prove effective for aphids, Japanese beetles, leafhoppers, mites, and scales. For eliminating caterpillars, spray Bacillus thuringiensis on the foliage. They will die within a few days of ingesting these bacteria. Application of sulfur spray may prove beneficial for countering fungal diseases. Consult a horticulturist or the local garden center for proper guidance relating to control of pests and diseases in grape ivy.
In short, grape ivy is a hardy plant that can be grown easily. However, it may turn aggressive and cover a whole area in a very short span of time. When grown as a wall cover, grape ivy can cover the whole building including the windows and doors. So, prune them properly at regular intervals. If you want to remove an established grape ivy plant from the wall, don’t pull out the vines. One method is to apply a herbicide like glyphosate during late summer. The plant will die within a week or two. Another method is to remove the trailers as well as the leaves and spray white vinegar.

Tips on Planting Daylilies

Daylilies have three petals and three sepals, together known as tepals. Planting them is easy due to their adaptable nature, little care, vigorous growth, and surviving abilities. They are one of the easiest flowers to plant in your garden as they can also survive winters with only little injury.

Planting Guide

Planting: Choose an area in your garden that receives sunlight for at least 5 to 6 hours everyday. Next, remove the roots of unwanted plants that may be present in the soil earlier. Dig out a hole in the ground that is a little bigger and wider, so that the roots can easily sit in. Mix the fertilizers in the soil. Place your plant in the hole, gather the soil around it and then, water the plant.

Soil: Daylilies grow best in soil that is well drained with a pH between 6.5 to 7, but they are so adaptable that they can actually grow in soil containing any pH. They will also grow in sandy soil as well as heavy clay soil. If your garden has heavy clay soil, you can add manure, peat moss, good compost, gypsum, etc., to make it suitable for your flowers. Adding compost or another organic material to the soil increases its nutrition value. If there is a drainage problem, raising the beds is the easiest option available.

Water: These plants grow best in early spring. But if you buy them in other seasons, save them from drought. Watering will ensure big and bright blooms. Water sufficiently in spring, and also in summer, which will help boost their growth. These plants are capable of withstanding drought, but obviously less water is going to make them dry off and wither away. Pour water up to an inch every week so that the soil soaks it up at a greater depth.

Fertilizers: If you want to know what exact nutrients your soil needs, get a soil analysis done. The soil should be fertilized every two to three weeks after plantation. If you are using chemical fertilizers, doing this twice a year is sufficient. Chemical fertilizers should be added in early spring. Mulching is one of the best ways to make the soil more fertile.

Insects: Insects such as aphids, thrips, spider mites, snails, and slugs feed on the blooming flowers and buds. These can be killed by spraying some insecticide or by simply watering with force. These insects cause discoloration and holes in the leaves. Although the insects may do minor damage to these plants, it might be difficult to tell the exact cause of any disease. Hence, it is better to consult an agricultural agent, or a local nursery.

How to Make Your Garden Greener

Bananas are something everybody goes bananas over, in the good way or the bad! It is probably the first fruit that a baby learns to eat because it is so easy to chew, digest, and is very nourishing as well! Bananas are the best source of potassium, and make for a healthy snack. But did you know that the plants in your garden would also love it if you fed them bananas? There are several benefits of using bananas as fertilizers. First and foremost, bananas as fertilizers, are ‘organic’ substance. Hence, unlike chemical fertilizers, the fruit and its skin are both degraded easily and completely. They do not accumulate in the nature. To add to that, it can be used as fertilizers for almost all the plants commonly grown as house-plants or garden-plants. Banana fertilizer works for fruits, vegetables and flowers equally well. There are also several ways in which you can actually use bananas as fertilizers. If you have been contemplating using bananas in your garden, worry no more! Read on to find out how to use bananas as fertilizer.
Banana Skin

Banana skin is also as rich in potassium and even phosphorus, just as the actual fruit that we consume. The skin or peels make for a great organic source of these nutrients for the plant. The easiest way to use banana skin is to simply place it in the tilled soil around your plants. The peels decompose into the soil due to the action of different microorganisms in the soil. Alternatively you can shred the banana skin or break it up into little pieces and mix it with the fertilizer you apply. You may even dig up a little bit around the plant (taking care to not damage the roots of course) and place the peels and then cover them up. This ensure faster decomposition. Also burying them means the peels are in closer contact with the plant roots. Sometimes just placing them on the surface may cause them to be eaten up by your pets, or by birds and insects, so that hardly any is left for the plants. Burying them ensure your plant gets chunk of the nutrients.
Banana Mulch

Being rather fleshy and moist, banana peels can be used as mulch as well! They retain water efficiently. You can place banana skins into a plastic bag and punch little holes into the bag. This can then be placed the way you place regular mulch. If the peels disintegrate or decompose, do not worry! You can always add fresh peels into the bag; alternatively you can keep several banana mulch bags ready. If you want a more eco-friendly option, you may choose to use a jute bag in place of plastic. They are porous enough to not require additional holes being punched into them. You can even wash them clean and reuse them.
Banana in Compost

A lot of people who are fond of gardening usually have a compost bag, a compost bin or a small compost pit right in their garden. If you don’t, it’s never too late! A lot of kitchen waste can go into the compost – vegetable refuse, potato skin, left-over of apples, pears, egg shells, and yes, banana peels too. The benefit of using compost over single components is that – you add one scoop of your garden compost, and you don’t have to worry again! Due to the different things that go into the compost, it becomes a rich mix of all the nutrients a plant needs, from calcium to phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and all the micro-nutrients. You can convert an empty pot into a compost bin. Otherwise you can collect all your compost material in a plastic bag, dig up a pit in a clear patch in your garden and then dump everything into it and cover it up. In about 2-3 weeks time, all the components would have degraded into a nice compost you can use for all plants in your garden.
Which Plants Can Be Fertilized With Banana?

Bananas as fertilizers work good with a number of plants. They work good with roses, the roses blooming bigger in size and with intense color. Bananas also work wonders on tomatoes and potatoes. They have shown to work for fruits like strawberries too. And of course they are good for the mother plant as well – bananas! Adding the entire fruit to the ground can also boost your plant to bud, bloom and fruit! This may seem a little wasteful, but then you can always add the slightly spoiled or rotten bananas that you are going to trash away. Better put them to some use than totally throw them away!
Bananas have a lot of health benefits. Banana flowers are also consumed by humans. All this is because of the nutritious value of the fruit. One tip here would be to buy organic bananas. They may be slightly costlier, but they have better health benefits, and their skins act as better fertilizers. Using banana skin fertilizer is also a great way of recycling kitchen waste – so you can be proud you are doing your little bit to keep the planet clean and green! Happy gardening!
